Basic FTP information

WHICH FTP CLIENT SHOULD I USE?

Well, whether you are on Windows or some flavor of UNIX, there are literally hundreds to choose from, varying in price from Free to a few hundred dollars.

Advantex LLC recommends FileZilla client if you are looking for a great, free FTP client.

If you need features such as directory synchronization, we can recommend FTP Voyager, as we use it on a daily basis.

PORT vs. PASV MODE

Our FTP servers and firewall configurations all support both PASV and PORT mode FTP file transfers.  Which you choose to use will depend completely upon what you have the best luck using.  Simply put, Advantex LLC will always recommend starting out in PORT mode, as that is what works most consistently for us.  However, various routers and firewalls between your FTP client and our server may cause problems with either mode -- so you should try both.

IS FTP SECURE?

In a word, NO.  You can Google "FTP Security" to learn about the different ways an attacker could gain access to your files and data through your use of FTP, none of which can be prevented.  Has it ever happened here?  No.

But if you are concerned at all about the sensitivity of the data you are uploading or downloading, there are alternative file transfer methods we could set up for you.  Simply open a ticket or give us a call to discuss your specific situation.
